Having trained classically, I firmly believe in working from life. I paint my seashell still lifes in my studio using natural light exclusively. I usually have at least four set-ups under different light conditions in progress at any given time to allow me to work regardless of the time or weather conditions.
Landscapes are worked from life en plein-air or in the studio from sketches done on site.
Sculptures are worked from sketches, life, or memory. Occasionally, reference photographs are used for commissions when the subject is not available.
