AGORA GALLERY, NEW YORK, USA:
The canvases of Boris Selan are a testimony to the Slovenian artist’s skill, which demonstrates a full understanding of color, form and composition. His oils come alive as cubistic arrangements. They evoke seminal works by Duchamp or Picasso, and their style is reminiscent of early twentieth century art deco. Although the works are figurative, Selan renders his subjects, often nudes and Lipizzan horses, in an abstract manner, while his background as a fashion photographer is evident in his stylized nudes. The painter’s love of the female figure has led his work to be published in international magazines, including Playboy.
Selan's bold use of color is what distinguishes him from other, less daring, abstract artists, always controlled but often including brazen tones which induce an emotional response in the viewer. While he paints mainly in oils, Selan is well-trained in other painting techniques, such as pastels, ink, acrylics and watercolor, and is also a sculptor. He has had an extensive artistic career, has worked for the magazine Elle, and has exhibited extensively in his native Slovenia.
